Our next object is an Illy coffee machine – the owner tells us that  the Differential Fuse trips down when switching the machine on. This is a typical failure with coffee machines and any other apparatus containing a heating element.

Diagnosis and Root Cause 

Possibly one of the elements inside is worn out and creates a leak towards earthing

Repair

• Opening of the tool to examine the elements
• Pictures are taken from the interior and connections of the different elements:

The heating element has a resistance of 52 Ohm, and a resistance to earth of 6 KOhm, 
which seems to be the responsible to cause the problem ( larger than 10 KOhm). 

A new one was ordered and installed and the machine started to work again. 
The resistance to earth after was around 200 KOhm
